After review of the first four desires and the ultimate and pointless end, I am left with a view of the wisdom with which the writer in the Bible writes, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity,” and continues on with the ultimate pointlessness of any accomplishment to which we can achieve.
It becomes obvious that all along it is the intention of the Creator to bring us to the fifth desire, the one that we cannot reach without His direct intervention that He put the other four into our path that we may have the experience of climbing them and the knowledge of their pointlessness, once we have fallen from them and left them behind. As St Paul wrote in the end of his life when he writes out his many accolades and then writes that he counts them all as “shit” (that is the actual word he used, not mine) compared to what lies before him.
Most of us won’t reach the pinnacle of all four desires. In my case, I’ll lack wealth, power, and ultimate knowledge, but unless a person is willfully blind and ignorant, we still know from the biographies of many who have been there of the fruitlessness that can follow reaching the highest material achievement.
It’s fascinating how human development and perception of the world has been influenced by egoistic desires. We have evolved from pursuing self-centered desires to forming meaningful connections with others, ultimately leading to true fulfilment. The ultimate longing for spirituality involves moving beyond the ego and the sense of separation toward unity and altruism.
