All four levels exist within us:

Our body is inanimate.
Our biological urges are vegetative.
Our emotions and instincts are animate.
Our soul and conscious awareness are human.
The spiritual path in Kabbalah is to elevate each level—to transform even the inanimate parts of the self (habits, ego, passivity) into vessels that serve spiritual goals.
