You are right.  It is impossible.
We are built as a will to receive and we only act where we calculate that we will benefit.
So it takes an external force that operates on us, it is called generally the light that reforms, we will learn about it later.
It is not hocus pocus, you can see a similar phenomenon in our world.  Remember when you were  a young girl in school and your first love, your first crush.   You were in school and you never paid attention to boys and then one day all of a sudden your heart flutters and when you look at one special boy.  It’s not sexual, there is not touch, nothing, there doesn’t need to ever be, but a moment before those feelings didn’t exist, and then something happens and you have a whole new set of feelings.
So this is an example from our material world.  Something similar happens in spiritually, however, the first example comes naturally. Our work and spiritual love comes from what we build together and that is what we learn how to do here together.

You’ll see that this whole work is for us to become like the Creator.  As He is merciful, we too will be merciful.  We become love and bestowal like He is.  It means I’m not only loving someone who does me a favor, but I become unconditionally loving.  How?  Well, that is what I explained above and we will do this together step by step.

Slow down, don’t go out and try to love the person living in the house next to you if they are mean, maybe violent, who knows what.
Everything happens in a methodical way.  For example, first you feed your kids, you don’t just go feed any kid in town.  So here we are learning the fundamentals of the wisdom together.  Later you will have the opportunity to do practical work in small group of other kabbalistic students who are on the path with you, studying the same sources with you and advancing together.  There you will learn to do this work together.

This article will accompany us throughout our study.
Our work in KabU is to present the fundamentals of the wisdom of kabbalah in a way that every person who desires can approach the authentic wisdom. Each step is thought out according to how one will go though development in the mind and the emotions.

Regarding God, we don’t even have what to discuss yet, as one must acquire new definitions for all of these words that we have from our corporeal lives…God, love, evil. We use these words all day, and kabbalah uses these words, they are certainly not the same thing. I recommend, adhering to the lesson material from week to week and investing as much as you can. If you do this, surely you will develop quickly and with a sturdy spiritual foundation.

Baal HaSulam straightens this out for you in item 3 of the Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah. He says,

”

3) The above-mentioned order of cascading, which brings the will to receive to its final form in this world, follows a sequence of four phases that exist in the four-letter-name [HaVaYaH (Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey)]. This is because the four letters, HaVaYaH, in His name contain the whole of reality, without any exception.

In general, they are described in the ten Sefirot, Hochma, Bina, Tifferet, Malchut, and their root. They are ten Sefirot because the Sefira [sing. of Sefirot] Tifferet contains six internal Sefirot, called HGT NHY [Hesed–Gevura–Tifferet Netzah–Hod–Yesod], and the root is called Keter. Yet, in essence, they are called HB TM [Hochma-Bina Tifferet-Malchut].

These are four worlds called Atzilut, Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya. The world of Assiya contains this world within it. Thus, there is not a creature in this world that is not initiated in Ein Sof, in the thought of creation to delight His creations. Hence, it is innately comprised of light and vessel, meaning a certain measure of abundance with the will to receive that abundance.”

Allen,
There is nothing you can “do” to build the screen.
For example, a newborn will get fed, but what will it do besides cry?
It is the Upper One who does all the doing.  The lower one only needs to want.
So for us it is about what we want.  The Light performs all spiritual operations according to the desire of the kli.
Your approach is backwards, you are looking for some formula and some understanding of something that is out of grasp.  How to explain to a 10 year old what it means to fall in love…some things you can explain, other things, there is no way to explain until he grows and has those desires in him.

But your passion to want to know, that is the main thing here.  So continue to try to understand and think about it, but also understand that the answer is not that you will hear something and then you will understand.  The answer will come over time as you advance in the study and your desire grows on the one hand and your development in the fundamentals of the wisdom grows and with this heart and mind development, things will clarify for you internally.
