I feel that we are being directed – or led – to a state that in Zen would be called “enlightenment” or “awakening,” a state in which all is seen as the One Thing. I look forward to understanding how the Torah’s commandments will lead us to that state.

I have had spiritual experiences, as I imagine everyone in this class has, and during the times that I feel most connected with the Creator, what I feel is a sense of emanation. I am emanating something – kindness, good will, some sort of desire for the good of everyone and anyone – but I never thought of it as “bestowal.” So are we talking about the same thing here, or am I totally off-track?

I understand that prayer is a means of connecting with the Creator, as a way of aligning ourselves with Him. Prayer for self or others will not change the outcome; such prayer is an expression of our egoistic nature. This is not a bad thing, per se, because we were created with an egoistic nature, and in such an activity, we are simply expressing that nature. There is no point in admonishing a cat for meowing; that is its nature! But the mere act of prayer is a means by which we grease the skids, as it were, for communicating with the Creator. Does that sound right?
